Put the clues together
Two landmarks are better than one guess.
The passenger is by the east entrance, not the main lobby. The front street is blocked, so the driver should approach around the back. A yellow awning and nearby bike racks identify the final meeting point. The passenger asks for a call before cancelling the ride.
Three details to notice
- “By” means near a location here. It does not identify who created or owns the entrance.
- “Come around the back” describes an alternate approach. The passenger has not moved to the main lobby.
- “Before you cancel” gives an order of actions: attempt contact first, then consider cancellation.
Common mix-up: The main lobby is mentioned to exclude it. Always listen for the contrast rather than choosing the first familiar place name.
Listen for the purpose.
Everyday English is more than recognizing each word. A speaker may make a request, change a plan, give a condition, or explain a preference. First identify what they are trying to do. Then listen for the detail that changes your response.
I'm standing under the yellow awning, next to the bike racks.Notice the small words.
Listen for contractions, short phrases and sentence stress. Words such as “if”, “before”, “not” and “instead” can change the whole situation. A familiar noun alone is not enough to understand the message.
Try it in three passes.
- Listen once without the transcript. Catch the general purpose.
- Listen again for the person, place, time or condition.
- Check the transcript only when you need support. Then repeat the key phrase naturally.
The conversation
Hey, I'm by the east entrance, not the main lobby.
The front street's blocked off, so you'll need to come around the back.
I'm standing under the yellow awning, next to the bike racks.
If you still can't find me, give me a call before you cancel the ride.
