Convenience and Control

Mara stored her team's notes in a convenient online service. Search worked well, and sharing a page took only a moment. When the service changed its pricing, she began considering alternatives. Only then did she examine how the notes could be exported.

The service offered a download, but some links, comments, and formatting did not survive the move. The files were readable, yet recreating the team's working structure would take time. Mara realized that access to a download was not the same as an effortless transition to another system.

The team kept using the service while testing a few exports and documenting what would need manual repair. This did not mean convenience had no value. It meant they could weigh that value against the cost of leaving. Choosing a tool responsibly includes understanding both how work enters it and how important information can come out.
