Owning several investments can look like diversification, but the number of products is not the whole story. The US investor-education website Investor.gov explains that diversification involves spreading investments across different holdings and types of assets. A fund focused on a narrow industry may not provide the same spread as a broadly invested fund.
Imagine an investor who buys three funds with different names. Each fund holds many of the same large technology companies. A problem affecting that industry could therefore hurt all three. The investor has three products, but may still have one major source of risk. Looking at the holdings would reveal more than counting the fund names.
Diversification can reduce exposure to a single company or area, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent every market loss. Costs and the investor's time horizon also matter. The lesson is to examine what an investment actually contains and how it fits with the rest, rather than assuming that a larger collection of labels automatically means a safer portfolio.
