When people hear the word exercise, they often picture a gym. But moving your body is not limited to lifting weights or joining a class. Walking to a shop, riding a bicycle, and doing active work at home can also be physical activity. The World Health Organization includes these kinds of movement in its guidance.

Imagine a person who sits at a desk most of the day. A short walk is not the same as a full exercise plan, but it adds movement to time that would otherwise be spent sitting. The useful question is not only, "Did I go to the gym?" It is also, "When did I move today?"

Small activities are part of a bigger picture. Their amount and intensity matter, and different people have different needs. An easy first step is to notice your daily pattern, rather than treating every day without a gym visit as a day with no activity.
