An AI answer appears on a screen, but producing it depends on physical equipment. Data centers need electricity to operate their computers and support systems. In its Energy and AI report, the International Energy Agency projects that global data-center electricity use could more than double by 2030. That is a forecast, not a measurement of electricity already used in 2030.
A global total does not explain every local problem. Imagine a new data center planned beside a town. Even if enough electricity exists across the country, the nearby grid may not be ready to deliver it at the required place and time. A project can therefore face a connection delay without the whole country running out of power.
The report also discusses options such as choosing locations with available grid capacity and operating more flexibly. Our example illustrates why the debate is about infrastructure as well as software. Reading an AI headline carefully means asking which facilities, which location, and which assumptions the numbers describe. A projected trend is useful information, but it is not a guaranteed outcome.
