An AI system that chooses tools and directs several steps can appear more capable than one that simply answers a question. Anthropic's engineering guidance distinguishes agent-driven decisions from workflows whose routes are defined in code. It also emphasizes that added complexity should earn its place through better results, because autonomous steps can introduce additional cost and delay.

Consider a hypothetical customer-service process. A system might read a message, locate an order, and prepare a proposed response. Allowing it to issue refunds would add a different kind of authority. A correct summary does not demonstrate that its financial decision is reliable, and a useful draft does not justify removing every approval step. The business must decide what the system may observe, suggest, and actually change.

One practical design is to separate low-impact information gathering from consequential actions and evaluate each stage independently. This is our application of the broader engineering principles, not a claim that one architecture fits every company. The meaningful business question is whether the process delivers dependable value within clear permissions. A longer chain of automated steps is impressive only when the resulting service is measurably better.
